“DANTE” NOW A TROPICAL DEPRESSION, TO BOOST MONSOON RAINS OVER LUZON

One of the two monitored Low Pressure Areas (LPA) within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has intensified into a tropical depression and was named “Dante” by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its 5:00 PM weather bulletin, PAGASA reported that Dante was last spotted 1,115 kilometers east-northeast of Central Luzon, moving north-northwest at 20 km/h.

The tropical depression carries maximum sustained winds of up to 45 km/h near the center and gusts reaching 55 km/h.

According to PAGASA, Dante is expected to “absorb” the other LPA currently inside PAR.

However, the weather bureau clarified that the second system is not expected to directly affect the country.

Nevertheless, PAGASA warned that the tropical depression may intensify the effects of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, which continues to bring significant rainfall to large parts of the country.

In its 8:00 PM Rainfall Warning, PAGASA placed Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, and parts of Bulacan and Batangas under the Orange Rainfall Warning category.
