With three years remaining before the 2028 Philippine presidential elections, several political analysts have already begun naming possible candidates who could vie for the presidency and become the country’s 18th Chief Executive.
Among the names floated are:
- Vice President Sara Duterte (Hugpong ng Pagbabago) – The daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte and current Vice President of the Philippines, Duterte remains a strong contender despite facing an ongoing impeachment trial over alleged corruption. Analysts say her political influence and grassroots following continue to give her a competitive edge.
- House Speaker Martin Romualdez (Lakas-CMD) – A cousin of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Romualdez is seen as a possible administration bet in 2028. While he currently polls lower than other potential candidates, analysts believe his political connections and resources could prove advantageous.
- Senator Raffy Tulfo (Independent) – A journalist-turned-lawmaker known for championing the grievances of ordinary Filipinos, Tulfo’s populist appeal and strong national visibility position him as a formidable candidate.
- Senator Risa Hontiveros (Akbayan) – A two-term senator and former party-list representative, Hontiveros has begun to show signs of presidential ambition, according to some observers. Her progressive stance and consistent opposition role may resonate with a growing reform-oriented base.
- Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo (Liberal Party) – The former Vice President and Camarines Sur 3rd District representative continues to have significant influence, especially among the youth. Her endorsement of Senators Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan in 2025 was seen as a key factor in their electoral success.
- Senator Bam Aquino (Kilusan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino) – Analysts are speculating on the possibility of a third Aquino presidency following Aquino’s surprising second-place finish in the 2025 senatorial elections. This strong showing is believed to give him the momentum for a potential presidential run.
- Senator Bong Go (PDP-Laban) – Once the longtime aide of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Go rose to national prominence through his “Malasakit Centers” program. While he topped the recent senatorial race, analysts are divided on whether his performance is enough to propel him to a higher office.
So far, only Duterte and Hontiveros have publicly expressed interest in running for president in 2028.
With three years to go, analysts emphasize that much can still change on the road to the next national elections.
