Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez has been re-elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives with an overwhelming 269 votes, ensuring his continued leadership in the 20th Congress.
Romualdez, a first cousin of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., will remain at the helm of the lower chamber following his leadership in the 19th Congress.
His nomination was formally made by one of his closest allies, Quezon 2nd District Representative Jay-jay Suarez, who praised Romualdez’s leadership as visionary and impactful.
“Under his stewardship, the House of Representatives became a true House of the People — responsive to the needs of the nation, attuned to the voice of the common Filipino, and anchored in the values of unity, service, and progress,” said Suarez.
Suarez further emphasized Romualdez’s qualities as a leader.
“He brought not just experience, but character – marked by quiet strength, strategic foresight, and unwavering commitment to public service. With clarity of vision and steadiness of hand, he championed landmark reforms, strengthened legislative–executive cooperation, and ensured that every voice, regardless of affiliation or region, found space in our national conversation.”
The nomination was seconded by Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Sandro Marcos, the Speaker’s nephew and the son of President Marcos Jr., as well as by Quezon Province 1st District Representative Mark Enverga.
Sandro Marcos was also elected as the new House Majority Floor Leader, taking on a pivotal role in steering the administration’s legislative agenda in the chamber.
