SENATE TO VOTE ON AUGUST 6 WHETHER TO PROCEED WITH VP DUTERTE IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

Senate President Chiz Escudero confirmed that the Senate will vote on August 6, 2025 (Wednesday) on whether to proceed with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling declaring the Articles of Impeachment filed against Duterte “unconstitutional” and barring the Senate from holding impeachment proceedings.

The ruling has divided senators, with some pushing to heed the Supreme Court’s decision while others seek to move forward with the trial.

In a press briefing yesterday, Escudero said the vote was scheduled for next week to allow each senator ample time to study the court’s decision.

“(We) place on record the agreement arrived upon in caucus earlier to set on a date certain the disposition of the matter pertaining to the Supreme Court decision in relation to the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Zimmerman Duterte,” Escudero stated.

He added, “For the record, it was agreed in caucus that the matter will be decided upon by the Senate on August 6, 2025, when we open session on that date in order to afford ample and sufficient time to the members to study the 97-page Supreme Court decision, excluding the concurring and separate opinions filed by five or six additional magistrates of the Supreme Court.”

Senate Minority Leader Tito Sotto and Senator Migz Zubiri also confirmed the August 6 vote, both noting that there had been attempts in the Senate to permanently bury the impeachment proceedings.

According to sources, Senators Sotto, Bam Aquino, Kiko Pangilinan, and Risa Hontiveros are drafting a Senate resolution urging the chamber to convene as an impeachment court despite the Supreme Court ruling.
