PH FILM BODIES UNITE TO STRENGTHEN LOCAL CINEMA AMID GLOBAL CHALLENGES

The Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP), Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), QCinema International Film Festival, and the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) are joining forces in a renewed effort to strengthen the local film industry.

The collaboration comes as several initiatives and events are set to roll out in the coming months. Among these is the launch of QC Cinematheque, alongside a competition aimed at showcasing the country’s best short films. QCinema is also scheduled to return in November, followed by the 52nd edition of the MMFF in December.

However, the MMFF is expected to face stiff competition from international releases, particularly the highly anticipated film Avengers: Doomsday, which is slated to premiere in the Philippines just a week before the festival opens in cinemas.

Meanwhile, in September, the country’s official entry to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film will be announced—another key milestone in promoting Filipino talent on the global stage.

These initiatives form part of a broader push to revitalize Philippine cinema amid growing challenges, including rising ticket prices, shifting audience preferences toward digital streaming platforms, strong competition from foreign films, and the economic pressures linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
