ANGARA REFUSES TO RESIGN AMID KICKBACK ALLEGATIONS

Department of Education Secretary Sonny Angara on Wednesday dismissed calls to resign, saying allegations linking him to kickbacks from anomalous flood control projects are “just hearsay.”

“Hindi siguro kasi hearsay lang yung nasa akin tapos wala pang specific accusation,” Angara told reporters.

He added, “Walang mention of any transaction or anything so kung sa korte yan, ibabasura yan di ba?”

The remarks came a day after Malacañang clarified that Angara need not tender a courtesy resignation “if he thinks he is clean.”

Former DPWH Undersecretary Roberto Bernardo had named Angara among former lawmakers allegedly benefiting from kickbacks tied to ghost or substandard flood control projects.

Angara, a former Senate Committee on Finance chair, reiterated that he has “never been involved in corruption” throughout his 21 years in public service.
