ANTI-DYNASTY NETWORK URGES PASSAGE OF COMPREHENSIVE LAW AMID CORRUPTION SCANDAL

The Anti-Dynasty Network (ADN) called on Monday, December 8, for the immediate passage of a comprehensive anti-political dynasty law, highlighting how the ongoing flood control corruption scandal has exposed the deep entrenchment of political families that enable systemic abuse of power.

In a statement, ADN said the scandal underscores “the entrenchment, scale, and normalization of corruption” fueled by political dynasties amid socio-economic inequalities. The coalition stressed that structural reforms, beginning with a long-overdue constitutionally mandated anti-dynasty law, are necessary.

The network outlined key provisions it considers essential:

  • No immediate succession into elective office by a family member.
  • A ban covering relatives up to the fourth civil degree of consanguinity or affinity, including grandparents, parents, in-laws, children, siblings, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, and first cousins.
  • Prohibition on relatives occupying overlapping positions:
  • No two relatives may run for or hold President, Vice President, or Senator simultaneously.
  • Local officials cannot hold overlapping provincial, city, or municipal offices.
  • Local officials barred from being related to their district representative.
  • Relatives of sitting officials barred from party-list nominations.

ADN emphasized that meaningful political reform also requires complementary electoral measures and active citizen participation. The network pledged to lobby for the law’s passage, expand alliances, and promote citizen-driven dialogue on inclusive politics and accountable governance.

Signatories include political scientist Julio Teehankee, Kiko Aquino-Dee, Aika Robredo, and Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, among others.
