ANTI-POLITICAL DYNASTY BILL SET FOR PLENARY DEBATE

House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms chairperson and Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong on Wednesday said the proposed Anti-Political Dynasty Law is expected to reach plenary deliberations within the next two weeks.

Speaking at a press conference on February 25, Adiong outlined the panel’s timeline, noting that a substitute bill consolidating multiple proposals will be adopted at the committee level next week.

“Next week na magkakaroon na tayo ng committee adoption [of the substitute bill].. So due na siya for I think for next, next week for plenary debate,” he said.

He underscored that the proposal is rooted in constitutional mandate.

“Nakita naman natin there’s no question about [the] anti-political dynasty [bill] kasi everyone agrees that there’s already that in the Constitution,” Adiong added.

The committee recently concluded a two-week series of public consultations in Cavite, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro City — areas with substantial voting populations — to gather public feedback on the contentious measure.

A total of 24 anti-political dynasty bills will be merged into a single substitute version. Once approved by the committee, the measure will proceed to plenary debates before the more than 300-member House of Representatives.

Although the 1987 Constitution calls for a ban on political dynasties, Congress has yet to enact an enabling law for nearly four decades, allowing members of the same political families to continue occupying elective posts.
