BABES SINGSON OPENS UP ON WHY HE JOINED THE INDEPENDENT COMMISSION FOR INFRASTRUCTURE

Former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio “Babes” Singson shared what convinced him to accept his appointment as a member of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI).

In the latest episode of veteran journalist Karen Davila’s vlog released on Monday, October 13, Singson revealed that his decision was rooted in his long-standing advocacy for nation-building and public service.

“In the past—especially in government—I’ve always accepted pioneering jobs like BCDA [Bases Conversion and Development Authority]. Walang kapares ‘yon. When we did the bidding in Fort Bonifacio, there was nothing like it. Even my first job was on family planning,” Singson recalled.

He added that taking part in projects that push for development and reform has always been part of his personal mission—despite opposition from his own family.

“My advocacy has always been related to this thing. So, I had no choice. But, of course, against the wishes of my family. In fact, my wife was really crying when I told her that I had accepted and my children said, ‘Why did you have to bring us here?’” he said.

Singson admitted he later apologized to his family for the sacrifices they had to make because of his decision.

“[I told them], ‘Pasensya na kayo. Your dad is crazy,’” he shared with a laugh.

Singson served as DPWH Secretary under former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III from 2010 to 2016.

He also disclosed that the Marcos administration had offered him a chance to return to the DPWH, but he declined the offer, choosing instead to focus on independent initiatives aligned with his advocacy for transparent and efficient infrastructure development.
