Cavite 4th District Representative Kiko Barzaga on Tuesday confirmed that he has gathered allies within the House of Representatives, openly admitting to repeatedly planning coup attempts against the chamber’s leadership.
In an interview, Barzaga acknowledged that he once sought to replace former Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez.
“Everyone wants to replace the Speaker, that’s why he was removed… because everyone has their own views of how the country should be run and what will be the best for our nation. So yes, the first thing is true, I want to replace the Speaker at the time,” he said.
He further admitted to consistently plotting against House leaders.
“I plot a coup against the Speaker all the time. So I plot a coup against Romualdez, against Bojie Dy. The one against Romualdez, that only started after I was betrayed by my party. Before then, I was very silent on that matter,” Barzaga explained.
“But afterwards, at least a week before Romualdez resigned, that’s when I started the call for investigation to his involvement in the flood control anomalies. That’s when I started trying to get support against him,” he added.
Barzaga said any possible move against current Speaker Faustino Dy III would depend on the situation when Congress resumes session in May, describing the present political environment as a “very chaotic scenario.”
He also confirmed the existence of the so-called “meow bloc,” earlier mentioned by Iloilo 1st District Representative Janette Garin.
“The meow bloc that’s true to some degree. We’re not officially called the meow bloc but yes, I have gathered a few allies in the Congress,” he said, adding that its membership remains “a secret.”
