The Bagong Henerasyon (BH) Partylist issued an appeal ahead of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) expected decision on former President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for interim release, which he sought due to his reportedly deteriorating health condition.
In a statement released Wednesday, November 26, House Assistant Minority Leader and BH Partylist Representative Robert Nazal acknowledged that many Filipinos continue to seek justice for past abuses.
“We have walked a long, painful road as a people, through wounds both visible and unseen. Many still grieve. Many still wait for justice. And we must never diminish that pain, nor forget the cost of silence,” the group said.
The partylist group emphasized that fairness must remain central to the process, adding, “However, we must also remember that justice is not vengeance, and that compassion is not weakness.”
The ICC Appeals Chamber is set to issue its ruling on Friday, November 28. Reports on Duterte’s declining health while in detention have prompted some groups to call for humanitarian consideration.
According to BH Partylist, Duterte, now 80, is a former powerful leader who is currently an elderly detainee facing serious medical issues.
“Whether one sees a faded hero or a fallen leader, it is not difficult to see the shadows of our own fathers, and our own grandfathers: weak, frail, and mortal,” the group added.
BH said they are praying for a decision that respects the rights of victims while weighing humanitarian concerns surrounding Duterte’s condition.
“On behalf of the Bagong Henerasyon Partylist, we are praying for a decision that balances justice with humanitarian compassion, and one that will help put closure on an issue that has divided our country. Let us also continue to pray for the former President especially for his health.”
The group also urged the public to respect due process as the nation awaits the ICC’s ruling.
