The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has begun conducting lifestyle checks on government officials as part of an intensified anti-corruption drive ordered by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
The move follows the President’s directive to audit possible irregularities in flood control spending, which has drawn national attention due to alleged misuse of funds.
Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed that the BIR has already started implementing the President’s order.
“Inutos na po sa BIR at ngayon po ay ongoing po ang ginagawa pong lifestyle check,” Castro said.
However, Castro noted that the Palace could not yet provide a timeline for the release of the initial findings.
In August, President Marcos directed the lifestyle audit of all government officials, particularly those linked to the controversial flood control projects across the country. He also ordered a continuous review of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) records to determine who were responsible for the questionable projects that were supposed to help address the country’s flooding problems.
Castro also shared that over 19,000 complaints have already been received through the “Sumbong sa Pangulo” website.
When asked, she did not specify how many officials are under financial scrutiny or whether contractors are included in the ongoing audit.
