The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called on the public to wear white every Sunday from October to November as a symbol of prayer and a call for national renewal.
In a circular issued on Saturday, October 11, CBCP President and Caloocan Bishop Cardinal Pablo “Ambo” Virgilio David explained the intention behind the appeal.
“For the past few days now we have been experiencing terrible calamities: typhoons, volcanic eruption, fires, and earthquakes—one after another! Let us beg the Lord’s mercy on our people,” said Cardinal David.
He urged the faithful to “[wear white clothes, display white ribbons] as a sign of our desire for transparency, accountability, and good governance, and as a humble prayer that our nation may be washed clean and renewed in God’s mercy, and spared of further calamities.”
The CBCP’s appeal comes after it recently urged Filipinos to uphold integrity amid the ongoing investigation into alleged anomalies in flood control projects across the country.
Meanwhile, 1Sambayan convenor and Trillion Peso Movement spokesperson Atty. Howard Calleja has likewise encouraged the public to wear white every Friday until November 30 as a show of protest against widespread corruption.
