Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman Atty. George Erwin Garcia confirmed that an estimated six senators received campaign donations from government contractors during the 2022 national and local elections.
“Around six, if I am not mistaken,” Garcia said in an interview with DZMM when asked whether other senators also received campaign contributions from contractors.
However, Garcia declined to name the senators, noting that the poll body is still awaiting the results of its ongoing investigation.
He also emphasized that contractors providing donations to politicians are not automatically violating the law.
The COMELEC has already issued a show cause order against Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero after it was discovered that Lawrence Lubiano, President of Centerways Construction and Development Inc., contributed ₱30 million to his 2022 senatorial campaign. Lubiano is among 55 contractors currently under investigation by the commission and is listed as one of the Top 15 contractors involved in flood control projects named by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Lubiano reportedly still has active government projects at present, confirming his ongoing involvement in public works contracts.
