The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has assured the public that preparations for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) scheduled on November 2 are moving forward, despite reports of a possible postponement.
COMELEC chairperson George Erwin Garcia said the poll body is aware of circulating information about a potential deferment but stressed that it cannot suspend its duties based on speculation.
“We have heard things like that (BSKE postponement) because of the current crisis,” Garcia said in an interview.
“But COMELEC cannot stop preparing just because of the buzz or news. We still need to prepare.”
The BSKE was originally set for December 1, 2025, but was later rescheduled to November 2, 2026 under Republic Act No. 12232. The measure also extended the term of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials to four years.
The most recent BSKE was held on October 30, 2023.
