Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman Atty. George Erwin Garcia confirmed that the poll body is targeting around three million new overseas voter registrations in preparation for the 2028 national and local elections.
Garcia underscored the significance of the overseas vote, noting that in 2028 Filipinos will choose the country’s next President and Vice President, who will serve until 2034, alongside other key positions.
“2028 is a very crucial year. 2028 is crucial in our political history because we are electing the president and vice president and other positions. This is very important,” Garcia said, as he led the signing of a memorandum of agreement for the establishment of field overseas voter registration sites.
The COMELEC chief said he is hopeful at least two million overseas Filipinos will sign up once registration officially begins on December 1 (Monday), stressing the importance of cooperation with other government agencies to achieve the target.
The overseas voter registration period for the 2028 elections will run until September 30, 2027.
