DA SEEKS FULL ₱176.7-B BUDGET FOR 2026 TO BOOST FARMERS, FISHERS

Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has urged the House Committee on Appropriations to approve in full the agency’s proposed ₱176.7-billion budget for 2026.

During the budget hearing, Laurel stressed that the amount must not be slashed, as it will strengthen subsidies and support programs promised under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for farmers and fisherfolk nationwide.

“Our goal is not simply to grow more food, but to ensure that every Filipino family has access to healthy, affordable meals. And that those who grow our food can live lives of dignity, not desperation,” Laurel said.

He emphasized that revitalizing Philippine agriculture is crucial, calling it the “backbone of the Philippine economy.” Laurel also acknowledged the plight of the 10 million agricultural workers who continue to live in poverty.

“This is not the future they deserve, and this is the reality we must change together,” he said.

The agriculture chief reminded lawmakers that one of President Marcos’ flagship programs is to strengthen and reinvigorate local agricultural production, stressing that the Philippines—known globally as an “agricultural country”—must live up to its potential.
