The Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced that a maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) of ₱120 per kilo will be imposed on both red and white onions beginning December 1, amid rising prices as the Christmas season approaches.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. explained that although supply remains limited due to delayed import arrivals, this does not justify excessive price hikes.
Based on the latest monitoring by the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service, onion prices have climbed to as high as ₱300 per kilo.
Laurel added that imported onions landed at around ₱60 per kilo, making the new price cap still profitable across the supply chain.
“At ₱120, everyone — from importers to logistics providers to retailers — still earns a decent profit,” he said.
