The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Sunday said it was closely monitoring developments in Venezuela after a United States military operation led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Angelica Escalona stressed the need for calm amid rising tensions.
“The Philippines is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Venezuela,” she said.
“The Philippines urges concerned parties to resolve disputes through peaceful means, and to exercise restraint to prevent escalation of conflict.”
As a precaution, the Philippine Embassy in Bogotá, which covers Venezuela, has issued guidance to Filipino nationals.
“The Philippine Embassy in Bogota, which serves as non-resident mission for Venezuela, has issued a travel and safety advisory to Filipinos in Venezuela, and stands ready to provide assistance to them, as necessary and appropriate, to keep them out of harm’s way,” Escalona added.
The DFA statement came after US President Donald Trump announced Washington’s “successful” strike against Venezuela that resulted in Maduro’s removal. The Trump administration has long accused Maduro of drug trafficking, allegations he has consistently denied.
