DILG ORDERS EVACUATIONS, SAFETY MEASURES AS TYPHOON NANDO INTENSIFIES

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has ordered local government units (LGUs) in high-risk areas to enforce preemptive or mandatory evacuations ahead of Typhoon Nando’s approach, warning that coastal, low-lying, and landslide-prone communities face the greatest danger.

In its directive issued Saturday, the DILG emphasized that the move supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call for stronger and more coordinated disaster response to protect lives and boost community resilience.

LGUs were also instructed to impose a no-sail policy and liquor ban to ensure safety and order during emergency operations. Small-scale fishing and sea travel are strictly prohibited until weather conditions improve.

To support evacuees, LGUs must prepare evacuation centers with stable power supply, food, water, and other humanitarian assistance, particularly for fisherfolk affected by the suspension of sea travel.

The DILG also ordered continuous monitoring of weather updates, deployment of health units and response teams, clearing of waterways to prevent flooding, and inspections of quarry and mining sites. Authorities were likewise told to conduct stability checks on dams as part of precautionary measures.

“All concerned officials must take immediate critical actions to minimize risk and protect lives and livelihoods,” the DILG stated.

The agency reminded the public to remain alert, follow advisories, and cooperate with local authorities.

According to PAGASA, Nando is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon by Monday as it nears Batanes and the Babuyan Islands. Storm surge warnings have already been raised for the coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.
