The Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday confirmed that it is investigating reports of petroleum product hoarding in a bid to protect consumers from individuals allegedly exploiting supply concerns linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
According to the agency, its field offices in Luzon and Mindanao have received complaints regarding irregularities in fuel supply and retail pricing.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin warned that individuals found violating Republic Act No. 7581 could face fines, imprisonment, and forfeiture of their petroleum products.
“We will not tolerate any attempt to take advantage of the current situation at the expense of Filipino consumers,” Garin said in a statement.
She added that, under the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the government is implementing a whole-of-government approach to safeguard the public and ensure the orderly supply and distribution of fuel across the country.
The DOE also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected illegal activities that could undermine domestic energy security.
