DOH URGES CONTINUED VIGILANCE AGAINST RABIES

The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday urged continued vigilance against rabies, even as reported cases fell by 65% in the first two months of 2026 compared to the same period last year.

From January 4 to February 21, the DOH recorded 17 rabies cases, down from 49 cases during the same period in 2025. Most new cases—13 or 76%—involved unvaccinated pets and stray animals.

“We shouldn’t be complacent kasi may rabies pa rin, at ang rabies ay deadly. ‘Pag ikaw nagka-rabies, once the symptoms start, almost 100% ang mortality. [This is] very important,” advised Health Secretary Ted Herbosa.

In observance of Rabies Month this March, the DOH reminded the public to:

  • Ensure pets are vaccinated annually
  • Consult a veterinarian regularly
  • Wash wounds immediately with soap and water if bitten, and seek care at a DOH-certified animal bite center
  • Follow the full post-exposure vaccine schedule

Herbosa also noted that PhilHealth has approved increased coverage for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis.

The enhanced animal bite package now covers up to ₱5,850, including post-exposure vaccines, wound care, tetanus prevention, antibiotics, and supplies.
