Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla has confirmed his intention to apply for the position of Ombudsman, with incumbent Ombudsman Samuel Martires set to retire on July 27.
Speaking to reporters on June 30 (Monday), Remulla said he plans to submit his application to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) before the end of the week.
“I’m submitting my application before Friday. I think I have a lot to offer there,” Remulla stated.
The JBC has officially opened the application period for the next Ombudsman until July 4, just two weeks before Martires’ retirement.
“I think the JBC is in the best position to appreciate whatever I have to offer as Ombudsman,” he added.
Remulla was appointed as Secretary of the Department of Justice in 2022 under the Marcos administration.
Prior to his DOJ post, he served as Cavite Governor, Representative of the 7th District of Cavite, and a member of the Provincial Board.
The next Ombudsman will oversee investigations and prosecutions of government officials accused of corruption and other misconduct, a role critical in promoting integrity in public service.
