Former Senator Franklin Drilon strongly opposed the proposal of Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano to have all government officials resign simultaneously and hold snap elections as a way to “reset” the country’s political climate.
“Walang mangyayari sa ating demokrasya kung ganoon ang ating susundin na patakaran,” Drilon said.
The term “banana republic” refers to a nation with a weak government that is easily controlled by powerful individuals or interests, often due to corruption and political instability.
Drilon emphasized that sudden leadership changes are not an effective solution. Instead, he advocated for the strengthening of institutions and holding government agencies accountable for corruption.
He also called on the public to elect leaders with integrity to restore order and public trust.
“Sa halalan, dapat ang mga matitino ang ating ihalal sa puwesto, hindi ‘yong mga barumbado,” Drilon said.
The controversy stems from a social media post by Cayetano urging all elected officials, from the President down to House members, to resign and conduct a “snap election” for a “fresh start” in government. He later retracted the call after netizens suggested he should lead by example.
