DSWD REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL PROTECTION IN 2026

As 2026 begins, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reiterated its support for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s goal of improving the quality of life of Filipinos.

“We remain committed to strengthening social protection programs, expanding poverty alleviation services, and enhancing community resilience to ensure improved well-being for all Filipino families,” Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said Wednesday.

The statement followed the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, which found 29% of adults reported their life improved, 36% said it worsened, and 34% said it stayed the same. This produced a Net Gainers score of –7%, classified as fair. Mindanao posted the highest score at +2, while Metro Manila and the Visayas fell to “mediocre” levels at –12 and –14.

Overall, 44% of Filipinos remain optimistic about their quality of life in the next 12 months.

Dumlao emphasized that the DSWD, under Secretary Rex Gatchalian, will ensure judicious and effective spending once the 2026 national budget is signed. She noted the ongoing review of the General Appropriations Act as part of accountability measures.

“The DSWD will support the Marcos Administration’s call to responsibly use the funds through prudent spending, execution of strong accountability measures, and implementation of social welfare and development programs that will help advance inclusive growth, protect the most vulnerable, and deliver meaningful improvements to the marginalized sector,” Dumlao said.

The SWS survey was conducted nationwide from November 24 to 30 among 1,200 adults, with a ±3% margin of error nationally.
