The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) cautioned the public against individuals pretending to have disabilities to gain privileges and benefits intended for persons with disabilities (PWD).
DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao said such acts are not only unethical but also disrespectful to individuals with genuine conditions, undermining efforts to ensure fair and inclusive opportunities for PWDs.
The statement was issued in support of the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), an attached agency of the DSWD, which condemned a viral TikTok video showing an individual allegedly faking a disability to obtain priority access at LRT Line 1.
Dumlao stressed that priority access in public transportation and other facilities is vital for vulnerable sectors.
“Ang maling pagpapanggap na may kapansanan para lamang makakuha ng priority access ay magpapahina sa layunin ng ating mga batas at polisiya para sa mga persons with disabilities. Dagdag pa dito na ang alinmang uri ng pagpapanggap ay labag sa kagandahang asal at sa batas,” she said.
Under Republic Act No. 7277, PWDs are entitled to a barrier-free environment that ensures safe and free movement in public spaces.
The DSWD also urged the public to respect existing rules and help authorities enforce priority access for vulnerable groups.
Reports of abuse, violence, or crimes against PWDs may be filed with the NCDA through its official email or social media platforms.
