DUTERTE CAMP APPEALS ICC RULING DENYING INTERIM RELEASE

The camp of former President Rodrigo Duterte has filed an appeal before the International Criminal Court (ICC) after the tribunal’s Pre-Trial Chamber I rejected their motion for interim release.

Duterte’s lead counsel, Atty. Nicholas Kaufman, confirmed that the appeal was submitted a week ago, describing the ICC’s ruling as “wrong.”

In a 23-page decision dated September 26, the ICC insisted that Duterte must remain in custody to prevent any interference with the investigation and judicial processes. The court also noted that the former president poses a flight risk and could influence witnesses if released.

The ICC dismissed the defense’s argument that Duterte should be freed due to his advanced age and health condition, saying that adequate medical services are available at the ICC Detention Center.

Duterte’s camp, however, maintains that he is unfit to stand trial due to cognitive decline, but the judges found no sufficient evidence to support the claim.

Meanwhile, Mamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Representative and former Senator Leila de Lima, along with several human rights groups, welcomed the ICC decision, saying it proves there is strong basis for the case against the former president.

Vice President Sara Duterte declined to comment on her father’s case, saying she is currently focused on assisting earthquake victims in Davao Oriental.
