Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III clarified that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will remain archived in the Senate until the Supreme Court issues a final ruling on the Motion for Reconsideration filed by the House of Representatives.
His statement came amid speculation from political observers that Sotto might revive the impeachment case now that he is back at the helm of the Senate.
“Wala pa, walang gagalawin do’n until malaman natin kung anong sinasabi ng Supreme Court,” Sotto told reporters.
In August, under then-Senate President Chiz Escudero, the impeachment trial of VP Sara was archived following a Supreme Court ruling declaring the Articles of Impeachment filed by the House as “unconstitutional.”
At that time, Sotto—then Senate Minority Leader—opposed the archiving, insisting that the Senate should wait for the Supreme Court’s final and official ruling.
The House’s Motion for Reconsideration challenging the Supreme Court’s earlier decision remains pending.
