The 23.8-kilometer Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), Metro Manila’s longest and most congested highway, is set to become more commuter and pedestrian-friendly following a directive from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
The President instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to make EDSA accessible for vulnerable sectors such as persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and pregnant women.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon and Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez conducted a joint inspection from Ayala, Makati, to Roxas Blvd., Pasay, accompanied by civil society groups including Altmobility PH and Move as One Coalition.
Dizon said the inspection prepared the agencies for immediate action “for the safety and accessibility of pedestrians and commuters in response to the directive of the President.”
Short-term plans include expanding pedestrian lanes, implementing shared bike lanes, establishing repair stops and waiting sheds, and removing obstructions along commuter routes.
