ESPIRITU HITS HOUSE OVER ‘DOUBLE STANDARDS’ IN IMPEACHMENT CASES

Labor leader and human rights lawyer Luke Espiritu criticized the House of Representatives for what he described as unequal treatment of impeachment complaints filed against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte.

In an interview, Espiritu stressed that accountability should apply equally to both top officials.

“Dapat walang double standards. Dapat ‘yung kay Marcos, dapat tumuloy ‘yan. But we know the reality pagdating sa impeachment. It is a political process. It’s a numbers game,” he said.

He clarified that pushing for the impeachment case against Marcos does not mean siding with Duterte.

“The conclusion should be both of them must be held accountable,” Espiritu added.

The lawyer underscored that impeachment is inherently political, heavily influenced by alliances in Congress.

“Alam natin ang House of Representatives, lahat ’yan ay mga kasapakat ni Marcos. Pro-administration. Siya ang may hawak ng pera, ng budget. Therefore, talagang ma-exonerate si Marcos,” he pointed out.

It will be recalled that the House dismissed impeachment complaints against Marcos while hearings against Duterte were allowed to proceed.
