The Department of Health (DOH) announced the passing of former Health Secretary Alfredo Rafael Antonio Bengzon on Tuesday, honoring him as a compassionate physician and visionary leader who championed accessible healthcare for Filipinos. Bengzon, who served from 1986 to 1992 under the administration of the late President Cory Aquino, died at the age of 90.
In its statement, the DOH highlighted Bengzon’s lifelong dedication to making healthcare more affordable and reachable for all Filipinos. His influential efforts included:
- The Generics Act of 1988, which institutionalized the use of generic names in prescriptions and dispensing to broaden access to essential medicines.
- A principled stance on family planning.
- A bold reorganization of the DOH aimed at improving governance and public service.
The department said Bengzon’s legacy will continue to shape the country’s health system for generations.
“Rest in peace, Sec. Bengzon. Maraming salamat sa iyong buhay na inalay para sa kalusugan ng bayan,” the DOH added.
Bengzon was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service in 1991 for his leadership and reform efforts.
He also served as the founding dean of the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health, cementing his role as a pioneer in health education and governance.
