GADON SAYS ROMUALDEZ STRONGEST ADMIN CANDIDATE FOR 2028

Presidential Adviser for Poverty Alleviation Larry Gadon declared that former House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez remains the administration’s strongest candidate to challenge Vice President Sara Duterte in the 2028 presidential elections.

In an interview with journalist Christian Esguerra on February 26, Gadon cited the political machinery of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration and existing alliances as factors that could secure Romualdez’s victory, despite his low ratings in pre-election surveys. Marcos is Romualdez’s first cousin.

“In terms of political machinery, following and alliances, I think that Martin Romualdez is still the most formidable candidate,” Gadon said.

Gadon dismissed allegations linking Romualdez to kickbacks from anomalous flood control projects, describing them as attempts to discredit the lawmaker.

“Kasi kumpleto siya, i mean yung makinarya nya… puro lang naman paninira ginagawa nila kay Martin, male-maleta eh kahit nga ₱1,000 wala silang maipakitang maleta eh,” he added.

President Marcos has earlier stated that he has yet to endorse any candidate for 2028, emphasizing that his focus remains on fulfilling his duties as Chief Executive.

Currently, three figures dominate pre-election surveys: Vice President Duterte, former Vice President and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo, and Senator Raffy Tulfo.

Duterte has confirmed her intention to run for president despite facing a potential impeachment trial, while Tulfo has indicated he prefers to seek re-election as senator.

Meanwhile, Liberal Party leaders, including Senator Kiko Pangilinan and Party-list Representative Leila de Lima, continue to encourage Robredo to pursue another presidential bid.
