GATCHALIAN EXPRESSES CONCERN FOR DIZON AMID DPWH REFORM CHALLENGES

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian voiced concern for Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon during the Senate Committee on Finance hearing on Monday, October 20, as the latter presented the agency’s proposed budget for 2026.

Before delving into the budget deliberations, Gatchalian began his remarks with praise for Dizon, recalling their time working together during the COVID-19 pandemic when Dizon served as the testing czar.

“Nakatrabaho kita during the pandemic time, where you were the testing czar of our country. I know how you work. You work fast, you work efficient, and you work decisive,” said Gatchalian.

He expressed confidence in Dizon’s ability to bring much-needed reforms to the DPWH, describing the task as a “big challenge.”

“So, I know you will be able to clean up and reform the Department of Public Works and Highways. It’s a big challenge, alam ko,” he added.

However, Gatchalian couldn’t help but share his personal concern after noticing Dizon’s apparent physical changes, hinting at the toll the job may have taken on him.

“Dati payat ka na, lalo ka pang pumayat. Dati mukha kang 50 years old, ngayon mukha ka nang 80 years old. Buti makapal pa ang buhok n’yo Secretary,” Gatchalian quipped, drawing laughter from those present.

The DPWH chief laughed off the remark and playfully touched his hair, acknowledging the senator’s light-hearted comment.

Dizon had previously admitted that the ongoing issues and reforms within the DPWH have been mentally and physically taxing.

“Hindi na [kaya],” he once said when asked if he could still handle the pressure. “Pero what choice do I have, right?”

Despite the challenges, both Dizon and Malacañang have maintained that the department will push forward with its cleanup efforts, focusing on transparency, accountability, and public trust amid corruption controversies.
