GATCHALIAN URGES STRONGER MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS AMID SURGE IN SUICIDE CASES

Senator Win Gatchalian has called on government agencies to intensify the implementation of comprehensive mental health initiatives following a sharp rise in suicide cases in Metro Manila.

The appeal came after the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reported that suicide incidents in the region more than doubled in the first quarter of 2026.

From January 1 to March 23, authorities recorded 111 cases, nearly three times higher than the 38 cases documented during the same period last year.

Police findings pointed to emotional distress, relationship problems, financial strain, and personal loss as common triggers.

The NCRPO also noted that many of these struggles often go unnoticed, though subtle warning signs may be present if families and communities remain attentive. Cyberbullying and the lack of regulation in online and gaming platforms were also cited as contributing factors.

Gatchalian stressed the urgency of addressing the issue, citing the government’s responsibility under the Mental Health Act (Republic Act No. 11036).

He said:

“Sa gitna ng patuloy na pagdami ng mga kaso ng suicide sa bansa, mahalagang patatagin natin ang mga programang magtataguyod sa kaligtasan at kapakanan ng ating mga kababayan, lalo na pagdating sa mental health.”

He added:

“Ngayon higit kailangan ng ating mga kababayan ang suporta sa mental health, lalo na’t hinaharap natin ang matinding krisis na nakakaapekto sa pang-araw araw nating pamumuhay.”

The senator also highlighted that ₱742.6 million has been allocated in the 2026 national budget for the Mental Health Program, in line with the mandate of the Mental Health Law.
