HOUSE ETHICS PANEL OPENS DELIBERATIONS ON SUNTAY’S REMARK

The House Committee on Ethics and Privileges has begun deliberations on a complaint filed against Quezon City 4th District Representative Bong Suntay following his controversial remark that had a strong reaction upon seeing actress Anne Curtis.

Committee chairperson JC Abalos of the 4Ps Party-list confirmed that Suntay attended Tuesday’s hearing in compliance with the panel’s directive. He noted that the lawmaker has 10 days to formally respond to the complaint.

Abalos explained that the committee has 60 session days to complete its proceedings but declined to disclose details of the discussion, citing House Rules that prohibit public disclosure of committee deliberations.

Process and Possible Sanctions
Once the committee concludes its deliberations, its findings will be submitted to the House plenary. If sanctions are recommended, all members of the chamber will vote on whether to impose them.

The complaint stemmed from Suntay’s remarks during a House Committee on Justice hearing last week on impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte, where he used an analogy describing his reaction upon seeing Curtis.

The case underscores the sensitivity of lawmakers’ conduct in official proceedings and the mechanisms in place to hold members accountable for remarks deemed inappropriate.
