HOUSE JUSTICE PANEL SUBPOENAS NBI IN VP SARA IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS

The House Committee on Justice has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to turn over records from its probe into Vice President Sara Duterte, who faces impeachment complaints over alleged threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

In a subpoena dated March 31, the panel directed NBI Director Melvin Matibag to appear at the April 14 impeachment hearing and present “certified true copies of all documents and photographs” gathered during the investigation.

Lawmakers said the materials are necessary to fully evaluate the bureau’s findings and the evidence collected.

The inquiry stems from Duterte’s remarks at a midnight press conference in November 2024, where she declared:

“May kinausap na ako na tao. Sinabi ko sa kaniya na kapag pinatay ako, patayin mo si (Marcos), si Liza Araneta at si Martin Romualdez. No joke. Nagbilin na ako. ‘Pag namatay ako, sabi ko, ‘Huwag ka tumigil hanggang hindi mo mapatay sila.’”

These statements have since been cited in impeachment complaints filed against her.

The House justice panel continues to deliberate on whether there is probable cause to elevate the complaints to the Senate, which would then conduct a full impeachment trial.
