The International Criminal Court (ICC) has rejected the appeal of former President Rodrigo Duterte challenging its earlier ruling that he is fit to participate in proceedings related to crimes against humanity charges.
In a decision dated February 13, the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber I dismissed the defense’s “Request for Leave to Appeal” against its January 26 ruling declaring Duterte “fit to stand trial.”
The defense had sought to elevate the matter to the ICC Appeals Chamber, arguing that the question of his capacity should be reviewed by a higher body.
However, the chamber ruled that the request failed to meet the standards required for an interlocutory appeal and found no sufficient grounds to suspend or delay the confirmation process.
As a result, the ruling affirming Duterte’s ability to take part in the pre-trial stage remains in effect.
The confirmation of charges hearing is scheduled to begin on February 23.
