IMEE URGES DISCIPLINE IN OFFICIAL STATEMENTS

Senator Imee Marcos has filed a resolution urging government officials to exercise professionalism and discipline in their public statements, particularly amid rising tensions between Philippine and Chinese authorities.

As chairperson of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Marcos lodged Senate Resolution No. 267, cautioning that reckless comments on social media could damage the country’s diplomatic relations and international standing.

“Hindi ko hangad na busalan ang malayang diskurso o gapiin ang ating mga opisyal sa pagtindig para sa soberanya ng Pilipinas,” Marcos said in a statement.

She emphasized, however, that careless or unsupported remarks could undermine bilateral ties and weaken the country’s ability to safeguard national interests, especially on sensitive maritime issues.

Marcos also underscored the Department of Foreign Affairs’ (DFA) repeated reminders that diplomatic channels remain the proper venue for resolving disputes.

“Igalang at pagkatiwalaan natin ang DFA—sila ang dapat nangunguna sa diplomasya,” she said.

“Bagamat ang ating soberanya ay mangunguna sa lahat ng usapin, nananawagan akong wag ng painitin pa ang hindi paguunawaan sa ibang bansa lalo sa ating mga kapitbahay gamit ang nakakainsulto’t walang galang na mga salita,” she added.

The resolution calls for restraint and accountability in official pronouncements to protect the Philippines’ diplomatic credibility while upholding sovereignty.
