Several members of the House of Representatives affiliated with the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) are reportedly considering filing an ethics complaint against Cavite 4th District Rep. Kiko Barzaga, following his recent claims about supposed internal discussions within the party.
According to House Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, Barzaga’s social media post was “pure nonsense.”
Barzaga had earlier alleged that during a meeting of Lakas-CMD members, the group discussed plans to make Party President and former House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez—along with some pro-administration lawmakers—state witnesses “in exchange for protection.”
Adiong dismissed the post as completely false, emphasizing that such a topic was never raised in the meeting.
“Hindi po namin napag-usapan doon kung anuman ang sinasabi ng iba nating mga kasamahan. Unang-una, si Roman Romulo ay hindi po siya Lakas member, at wala po siya doon,” Adiong clarified.
He added that lawmakers should focus on legislation, not on “spreading lies without any shred of evidence.”
“Alam naman natin kung ano ‘yung mga lumalabas sa kanyang Facebook accounts. It’s pure nonsense,” he said.
Adiong confirmed that Lakas members are now seriously considering an ethics case against Barzaga.
“It already abused his privilege of being a member of the House. Spreading these lies about the members… tarnishing the reputation of those who were not even present in that meeting,” he stated.
He further called Barzaga’s behavior “childish” and urged the House Ethics Committee to set clear behavioral standards for lawmakers.
“This spreading of lies, making bold accusations… has really to stop. We’ve been tolerating him for quite some time,” Adiong stressed.
Adiong also expressed concern over Barzaga’s conduct toward colleagues.
“Acceptable ba ‘yung bigla mo lang mag-a-approach ka sa isang kasamahan mo… tapos bigla mo siyang i-video, i-haharass mo siya, tatanungin mo siya, ipo-provoke mo siya ng certain response, tapos naka-live ka? That’s already harassment. That’s invading private space,” he said.
However, not all Lakas-CMD members share the same view. Batangas 1st District Rep. Leandro Leviste expressed admiration for Barzaga.
“Hanga ako sa kanya. I think kailangan natin ng mas maraming mga independent voices sa Kongreso,” Leviste said.
For his part, Barzaga remained unfazed by the threat of an ethics case.
“Lakas-CMD is free to file whatever complaint they want. I will defeat them along with everyone else,” he wrote on social media.
Barzaga is already facing a separate ethics complaint from members of the National Unity Party (NUP) for alleged misconduct and for posting malicious and seditious content on social media, including displays of wealth.
