The Liberal Party (LP) has come to the defense of Senate Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros amid a wave of allegations and political attacks against her.
In a statement released on Sunday, October 5, through its official Facebook page, the LP denounced the attacks as more than just ordinary political mudslinging — calling them a deliberate tactic to intimidate and silence principled voices in government.
“Ang ganitong paninira ay hindi simpleng politika. Isa itong taktika para takutin ang mga nagtatanong. Para patahimikin ang mga lider na may integridad. Para gawing leksiyon ang tapang ni Risa sa iba pang gustong magsalita,” the party wrote.
The LP reaffirmed its full support for Hontiveros and other opposition leaders who continue to champion truth and accountability.
“Pero hindi kami natatakot. At lalong hindi kami tatahimik. Buo ang suporta ng Partido Liberal sa mga lider-oposisyon na patuloy na nagsusulong ng katotohanan at katarungan,” it added.
According to the party, the controversy stems from Hontiveros’ persistent questioning of how public funds are used and her firm demand for transparency in government spending.
“She refuses to be silenced, because the truth has to be louder than the noise,” the LP said.
The issue follows broadcast journalist Anthony Taberna’s recent claim that Hontiveros allegedly made “insertions” or amendments in the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
Hontiveros, however, clarified that all her proposed budget amendments underwent the proper legislative process and were approved by the Senate.
