President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has appointed lawyer Charlito Martin Mendoza as the new commissioner of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), replacing Romeo Lumagui Jr. as the country’s top tax official.
The appointment, dated November 12, did not indicate the reason for Lumagui’s replacement, and Malacañang has yet to issue a statement on the leadership change.
Mendoza currently serves as undersecretary for the Department of Finance’s Revenue Operations Group, which supervises both the BIR and the Bureau of Customs. He previously served as district collector at the BOC’s Port of Cebu.
A lawyer and engineer, Mendoza earned his law degree from San Beda University and his geodetic engineering degree from the University of the Philippines. He placed third in the 2004 Bar Examinations.
