MARCOS SAYS AI CAN SHAPE LAWS BUT RISKS MUST BE MANAGED

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said Tuesday, December 9, that artificial intelligence (AI) could play a major role in governance, particularly in crafting laws that benefit Filipinos.

In the latest BBM Podcast episode, Marcos highlighted the need for the Philippines to understand and prepare for rapid AI advancements. Interviewed by college students, he stressed that many lawmakers still struggle to grasp emerging technologies.

“That’s why it’s not so easy. May kasabihan ‘yan. Legislation is always years behind technology. And the reason is, generally, legislators do not immediately understand technology. Mayroon diyan medyo techie na nakakaintindi pero karamihan hindi,” he said.

“So, what will you legislate? What’s the best way for the Philippines to take full advantage to maximize the use of AI?”

Marcos noted AI’s impact spans multiple sectors, including education, infrastructure, and renewable energy.

“I was making a list of subjects around AI that I wanted to discuss during the ASEAN. So, sinimulan ko. Simple lang. AI and education, AI and infrastructure, AI and renewables. Walang katapusan ‘yung listahan. It does not end,” he said.

He also warned against AI misuse, particularly in spreading fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

“The other side of the equation is, what are the things na kailangan bantayan natin. Ayan na ‘yung fake news, ‘yung mga misinformation, ‘yung mga disinformation,” Marcos added.
