President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday urged newly promoted generals and flag officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to view national defense as inseparable from protecting public funds.
Marcos administered the oath of office to 38 newly promoted AFP officers and one Foreign Pre-Commissioned Training Institutions (FPCTI) graduate at Malacañang Palace, using the ceremony to underscore the link between military modernization and fiscal responsibility.

“With the signing of the 2026 national budget, I reiterate the government’s commitment to uphold the welfare of the women and men who protect our nation,” the President said, citing updated base pay schedules and higher subsistence allowances for uniformed personnel.
He emphasized, however, that increased funding comes with greater accountability.
“More than your role as the protectors of our nation, you must also be among the faithful stewards who guard public resources,” Marcos said.
“Be among those who ensure that every peso translates into capability, preparedness and integrity,” he added.
The President’s remarks come as the AFP advances its modernization program backed by billions of pesos in public funds, while taking on expanded responsibilities in territorial defense, disaster response and international security cooperation.
Marcos also commended the AFP’s performance over the past year, highlighting its role in protecting Philippine waters, responding to disasters and participating in joint exercises with allied nations.
“Last year, the AFP remained focused on readiness with purpose,” he said.
He concluded by honoring the families of service members for their quiet sacrifices, saying, “Kayo ang tahimik na haligi at matibay na sandigan ng bawat kawal ng ating Sandatahan.”
