The National Unity Party (NUP) dismissed talk of an impeachment move against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., saying there is no plausible basis for such a complaint in the current Congress.
NUP Chairman and Antipolo City 1st District Representative Ronaldo Puno made the statement during a virtual press conference on Friday, January 16, as he addressed persistent rumors of an impeachment bid.
“Actually I don’t see any grounds for filing an impeachment case against the President. Kaya I would like to see whatever complaint there is,” Puno said.
The deputy speaker, a veteran lawmaker, added: “Even when we started analyzing, we’re trying to think what grounds can they put for an impeachment case. Is there culpable violation of the Constitution? Is there any of those things? Parang wala kaming nakikita.”
“So I would like to see what complaint they’re going to bring up, but I really am very skeptical that they’ll be able to come up with anything credible,” he further noted.
Under the Constitution, impeachment proceedings begin in the House of Representatives, where a complaint must be filed and endorsed by at least one member before referral to the Committee on Justice. The panel then determines its sufficiency in form and substance.
But Puno made clear that the NUP, the second largest political party in the chamber, will not support such a move.
“Obviously no,” he said, stressing that the majority bloc is not inclined to back any complaint.
“That’s why I’m already saying our party, I’m almost sure 100% we are not going to be for it. Number one, wala naman kaming nakikita,” Puno added.
He underscored that any impeachment effort must rest on clear constitutional grounds and withstand scrutiny under Supreme Court jurisprudence, unlike speculative attempts being floated against the President.
