The Office of the Vice President’s (OVP) security contingent decreased in 2024 to 335 personnel, though it remains one of the biggest groups within the agency, according to the Commission on Audit’s 2024 Annual Report.
COA noted that the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG) deployed “more than 335 personnel” to the vice president—down from 443 assigned from 2022 to 2023. Created in 2022, the VPSPG was established to provide an independent security detail for the vice president and their family.
Earlier in 2024, the Armed Forces of the Philippines reorganized the VPSPG into the AFP Security and Protection Group, expanding its mandate to include providing protection for other “very important persons” identified by the Defense secretary.
The 335-person security force accounts for nearly 43% of the OVP’s 781 total personnel complement, which includes 165 regular employees and 616 contractual, contract-of-service, protocol, and security staff.
For comparison, former Vice President Leni Robredo had 78 military personnel detailed to her in 2021, while former Vice President Jojo Binay had 82 in 2015.
The audit report did not specify the amount paid to VPSPG personnel. However, the OVP spent ₱194.557 million in personnel services for 2024. VPSPG members continue to receive their salaries from the AFP, with allowances provided by the OVP.
