PALACE CALLS FOR DUE PROCESS IN ARMY OFFICER CASE

Malacañang has urged the observance of due process for a Philippine Army official relieved from his post for allegedly withdrawing support for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro made the remarks Friday amid the Army’s investigation of Colonel Audie Mongao.

“Nakikinig at nagmamatyag ang Pangulo. Kung sinoman ang may dapat na may pabanagutan, ebidensya ang gamitin. Due process ang pairalin at ang kung ano ang sinasabi ng batas iyon ang ipapatupad,” Castro said.

Mongao was relieved as commander of the Training Support Group Thursday night following reports of his alleged withdrawal. However, he voluntarily submitted himself back under military control Friday evening.

“As of 1930 tonight (Friday), Col Mongao voluntarily submitted himself back to military control. We had a long talk, and he is fully cooperating with our investigation,” said Training Command Chief Major General Michael Logico, reaffirming the Philippine Army’s support for the Constitution and the chain of command.

Logico added that administrative and legal charges may be filed pending the investigation.

The United People’s Initiative, which has called for Marcos’ resignation, has expressed support for Mongao, commending him for his stance to “serve the people, not personalities.”
