PALACE: MARCOS WORRIED ABOUT ECONOMIC IMPACT OF IMPEACHMENT

Malacañang on Monday said President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is concerned about the impeachment complaints filed against him—not for personal reasons, but because of their possible impact on the country’s economy.

Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stressed that impeachment proceedings against a sitting president could affect national stability and investor confidence.

“Ang pagsasampa po ng impeachment complaint laban po sa Pangulo, hindi Pangulo lamang ang maapektuhan nito kundi ang buong bansa at pati ekonomiya,” Castro said during a Palace briefing on February 2.

She emphasized that while the President is worried, his concern is rooted in the broader implications for the economy rather than fear of the charges themselves.

“So, nababahala po ang Pangulo sa impeachment complaint na isinampa sa kanya, hindi para sa sarili niya dahil alam niya na wala siyang ginawang mali at walang impeachable offense siyang ginawa, pero nag-aalala siya sa epekto nito sa ekonomiya,” she added.

Castro said Malacañang respects the impeachment process, following the House Committee on Justice’s decision declaring the two complaints sufficient in form.

“That’s the process, we have to respect that,” she said.

Despite the developments, the Palace maintained that the President remains confident that the deliberations will show the accusations lack factual and legal basis.

“Even before, sinabi na po ng Pangulo na alam niya na wala siyang ginawang mali, wala siyang ginawang paglabag sa batas, at wala siyang ginawang impeachable offense. Kaya kumpiyansa siya sa sarili niya,” Castro said.

Meanwhile, Castro clarified that Malacañang had no involvement in the impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, noting that these matters are for Congress to evaluate.

“I believe they are almost the same allegations made, even before when the first impeachment complaint was filed. So, nothing new, or maybe a little few. But even if, we do not have any hand, we are not responsible to the filing of those impeachment complaints. So, it’s up to the Congress to evaluate and decide with regard to the subject matter,” she said.
