PALACE SHRUGS OFF IMPEACHMENT TALK

Malacañang on Monday expressed confidence in President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s leadership amid renewed impeachment chatter ahead of Congress’ resumption on January 26, saying the President remains focused on governance and protected by constitutional process and congressional trust.

The Palace reaction came after Caloocan 2nd District Representative Egay Erice claimed that an impeachment complaint could be filed against Marcos, despite no lawmaker publicly owning or detailing such a move.

Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro dismissed the talk as baseless, saying the supposed initiative allegedly came from supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Di umano may lumapit sa isang mambabatas na mga supporters ng isang politician, mukhang sila ay mga miyembro ng DDS (Duterte Diehard Supporters),” Castro said, stressing that Malacañang views the issue as political maneuvering rather than a legal effort.

Castro warned against trivializing impeachment, emphasizing that it is a serious constitutional process.

“Ang impeachment complaint ay hindi ito pang-media lamang. Hindi ito panakot lamang,” she said.

She also suggested the narrative may be an attempt to divert attention from unresolved issues involving Vice President Sara Duterte, adding that political controversies should be confronted directly.

Despite the speculation, Castro said the President remains unfazed.

“Ang Pangulo naman handa naman sa lahat ng pagkakataon dahil siya po ay gumagalang sa Konstitusyon, gumagalang po siya sa proseso,” she said.

Castro further rejected accusations of betrayal of public trust, particularly claims related to the signing of the General Appropriations Act, noting that Marcos did not misuse public funds and even ordered investigations into anomalous flood control projects.

She added that the President remains confident of congressional support, citing safeguards in the 2025 budget, including conditional fund releases and allocations placed under “for later release” status to ensure accountability.
