Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan is calling on all local government units (LGUs) to utilize the Sagip Saka Act to directly purchase produce and catch from farmers and fisherfolk, especially those affected by Tropical Depression Crising and the intensified Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).
In a social media post on Sunday, July 20, Pangilinan emphasized that implementing the law would not only support the livelihoods of those impacted by the recent weather events but also provide affordable and nutritious food for families in evacuation centers.
The Sagip Saka Act, or Republic Act No. 11321, was authored by Pangilinan and signed into law in 2019 by then-President Rodrigo Duterte.
The measure institutionalizes the direct purchase of agricultural and fishery products from farmers and fisherfolk to enhance their income and ensure food security in the country.
