PAOLO INTENSIFIES; SIGNAL NO. 1 UP IN CATANDUANES

Tropical Depression Paolo has slightly intensified, prompting the weather bureau to raise Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over parts of Catanduanes.

PAGASA said in its 5 p.m. bulletin on Wednesday that strong winds may be felt in the municipalities of Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, and Viga.

Paolo was last spotted 665 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes at 4 p.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

The weather agency also warned of a “moderate to high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights reaching 1 to 2 meters within 48 hours” along low-lying and exposed coastal communities in Cagayan, Isabela, and Aurora.

Paolo is forecast to intensify into a severe tropical storm by Friday. PAGASA said the system may make landfall over Isabela or northern Aurora either Friday morning or afternoon, before leaving the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday.
